HOW DIET AFFECTS MENTAL HEALTH

Every type of food affects our body differently, but it is of great importance to consume food that positively influences our mental health. In modern society, mental health is becoming an increasingly important topic, and one of the key areas of research is the connection between diet and mental health.

Balanced and varied nutrition rich in nutrients can help improve mood, increase energy, and support overall cognitive function. Conversely, unhealthy diets can contribute to the development of mental health problems. Unhealthy food typically refers to fast food, and globally, 2 out of 3 people eat fast food at least once a week.

Nutrition and Mental Health

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN DIET AND MENTAL HEALTH

The food we consume can significantly impact our mental health. The nutrients we get from different types of food play a crucial role in the production of neurotransmitters – chemicals that regulate our mood, energy, and cognitive function. For example, serotonin, known as the “happiness hormone,” is synthesized in the brain from the amino acid tryptophan, which can be found in foods such as eggs, cheese, and turkey.

FOODS THAT POSITIVELY AFFECT MENTAL HEALTH

There are certain groups of food that have a particularly positive effect on mental health:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Found in fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines, these fatty acids are known for their role in improving brain function and reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.
  • Fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants like blueberries, spinach, and walnuts help combat oxidative stress, which is linked to various mental health disorders.
  • Fermented Foods. Yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and other fermented products contain probiotics that support gut health, and it’s now known that there is a connection between gut health and brain health, known as the “gut-brain axis.”
  • Whole Grains. Whole grains such as oats, quinoa, and brown rice are rich in fiber and help maintain stable blood sugar levels, which is important for maintaining a stable mood.

FOODS THAT NEGATIVELY AFFECT MENTAL HEALTH

At the same time, there are types of food that can negatively affect our mental health:

  • Processed Foods. Products high in sugars, unhealthy fats, and additives can lead to rapid changes in blood sugar levels and cause feelings of fatigue and irritability.
  • Excessive Amount of Caffeine. While moderate caffeine consumption can improve mood and attention, excessive use can lead to anxiety and sleep disturbances.
